NH Driving License
Getting Driving License
Residents New Hampshire are required to have a valid New Hampshire driver license to legally operate a vehicle in the state. Drivers moving to New Hampshire from another state must obtain a New Hampshire driver license within 60 days of establishing residency in New Hampshire
To apply for your new NH driver's license, visit your nearest DMV office and:
- Present 1 document proving your identification. must be one of the following:
- Certified birth certificate.
- Current U.S. passport.
- Military ID card.
- Present 1 document proving your Social Security Number.
- Present proof of NH residency (e.g., mortgage statement, properly signed lease or rental agreement, etc.).
- Provide proof of any legal name change (e.g., marriage certificate or divorce decree).
- If applicable, provide all required documents as outlined for non-citizens.
Taking Your Driving Test
For the road test:
- Bring a properly titled, registered, and inspected vehicle that falls under the same class of license for which you're applying.
- Have a licensed driver bring you to and from the exam site.
If you pass the exam:
- You'll receive a temporary paper license good for 60 days.
If you fail the exam:
- You can retake it in 10 calendar days.
Non-US Citizen
Non-US citizens who are temporarily residing in New Hampshire or who have applied for permanent residency. these are the documents DMV NH require:
Original Driver License or Non-Driver Identification
- All Non-US Citizens must appear in Concord for the first time when applying for a driver license or non-driver identification card.
- Non-US Citizens who have established residency in New Hampshire should review the requirements for a Permanent Resident, Asylee, Refugee, Employment Authorization Card (EAD). Who are visiting on a tourist Visa (B1 or B2) are not eligible for a New Hampshire Driver License.
- Non-US Citizens who hold a student or work Visa should review the requirements for Non-US Citizens temporarily residing in New Hampshire.
- If you are an "A" or "G" Visa holder, please provide a letter of non-eligibility from the US Department of State.
- For a driver license, all Non-US applicants must take a full test (vision, knowledge and road test) at the Concord DMVunless you are transferring an out-of-state, U.S. Territory, Canadian, or French license not expired more than one year.
- If you do not have a valid driver license to transfer or a valid license from your home country, you must take a New Hampshire Driver Education course and must comply with the Driver Licensing Requirement for Minors.
- If you have an EAD card and already hold a NH driver license or identification card and are currently under deportation proceedings, you must provide your new court hearing date in order to receive an extension.
